Inspired by Françoise Sagan’s iconic coming-of-age novel, “Bonjour Tristesse” marks the vibrant and emotionally charged debut feature of Montreal-based writer and director Durga Chew-Bose.
Set against the idyllic backdrop of the sun-drenched south of France, the story revolves around Cécile (Lily McInerny), a spirited young girl navigating the complexities of adolescence, and her charming but indulgent widowed father, Raymond (Claes Bang). The pair are enjoying a carefree summer together, reveling in the warmth of the Mediterranean sun, while sharing their experience with Raymond’s latest romantic interest, the captivating Elsa (Nailia Harzoune). Their seemingly perfect and laid-back existence is suddenly thrown into disarray with the unexpected arrival of Anne (Chloë Sevigny), a sophisticated and poised old friend of Cécile’s late mother.
Anne’s presence forces Cécile to confront the shifting boundaries of love, loyalty, and the bittersweet nature of growing up.
