Women’s perspective / Kinuyo Tanaka, a Woman We Talk About

Introduction: Fujii Mami, director of Japan Foundation, Attila Varró, film critic

The Asai family reside in the quiet town of Nara. When Mr. Amamiya, an acquaintance they have not seen in a long time, pays them a visit, Setsuko, the youngest daughter, immediately notices the attraction between him and her soft-spoken sister, Ayako. The perky girl sets about arranging secret rendezvous and attempts to get the two reticent parties to express their love for each other. However, when it comes to acting in her own affairs, she is nowhere near as purposeful as she would like to be. The script for Kinuyo Tanaka’s second film was written by Yasujirō Ozu and it tells of the difficulties of talking about emotions specifically from the female perspective.
